The Problem: Picking Teams Costs Time – and Nerves
Everyone knows it from the sports club, the school activity group, or the casual team: before anyone can even start playing, you first have to laboriously figure out who plays with whom. Classic methods always share the same weaknesses:
- It takes forever to appoint captains and get through the selection.
- It’s unfair, because strong and weak players are often distributed unevenly.
- It’s subjective, because the assessment of playing strength depends on the person doing the picking, and by the third or fourth “best” player, the ranking becomes purely a matter of taste.
- It strains the social dynamics of the group when the same people are always picked last.
The result: unbalanced games, frustrated participants, and wasted time that should belong to the sport.
The Solution: Team Assignment Inspired by Matchmaking Systems
EvenlyGreat solves exactly this problem and goes a decisive step further than classic random generators. Instead of rolling teams purely at random or only fixing a few top players in place, the app uses an Elo rating system, as used in chess and in matchmaking for online games.
Concretely, this means:
- Everyone receives an objective skill rating based on past results, which updates automatically after every game.
- The team assignment takes all skill levels into account – not just those of the two best players.
- The software creates balanced, fair teams in (milli)seconds for any number of groups.
- A clear, web-based interface makes player and results management easy for anyone to use – no technical knowledge required.
The app was born in real club operations, is actively used there, and is continuously being developed further – not a theoretical concept, but a tool proven in practice.

GDPR-Compliant: Your Data Stays with You
A central building block of EvenlyGreat is operation on your own server. For you, this means:
- Your player and results data never leave your own infrastructure.
- Access protection sits in front of the application itself, so without valid login no connection is established at all.
- Passwords are stored exclusively as hashes, never in plain text.
- Automatic, regular backups provide additional protection against outages.
This means that operation meets the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and is also suitable for clubs and organizations that do not want to (or are not allowed to) use a cloud solution for data protection reasons.
About the Project
The app grew out of a simple random team generator that we developed further for our own volleyball club SC261 Halle e.V. – motivated by the experience of how frustrating unfair team assignments can be. From this club practice emerged a tool that is now successfully used in real match operations and is aimed, among others, at sports clubs, recreational groups, and similar organizations looking for fair and fast team assignments.
